Hillary Clinton let me know today (see her letter below) that this Saturday she is going to step aside and let the Democrats get on with the tough election they face this year, conceding the race to Barack Obama.
Thanks Hillary! Yes, it's time, and you are very needed in helping the Democrats win back the White House this year.
Many congrats to Barack Obama for running what has been, and continues to be a campaign that inspires hope among voters. He has really fired up the USA Democrats, and seems to be achieving a remarkable appeal, crossing over party lines and making mince of traditional voting patterns. This blog will be enthusiastically supporting Barack Obama in the run-up to the November '08 Presidential elections, as he did completely win me over earlier this year. I'd been on the fence for the early days of this race, and had wanted to see both candidates stop the primary campaign earlier, set aside their differences, and pal up on the Democratic party ticket to make a powerful partnership. Who knows, maybe that will still happen?
This is an exciting race, and I'll be watching it, from across the pond.

A Letter from Hillary to Me
Dear Lisa,
I wanted you to be one of the first to know: on Saturday, I will hold an event in Washington D.C. to thank everyone who has supported my campaign. Over the course of the last 16 months, I have been privileged and touched to witness the incredible dedication and sacrifice of so many people working for our campaign. Every minute you put into helping us win, every dollar you gave to keep up the fight meant more to me than I can ever possibly tell you.
On Saturday, I will extend my congratulations to Senator Obama and my support for his candidacy. This has been a long and hard-fought campaign, but as I have always said, my differences with Senator Obama are small compared to the differences we have with Senator McCain and the Republicans.
I have said throughout the campaign that I would strongly support Senator Obama if he were the Democratic Party's nominee, and I intend to deliver on that promise.
When I decided to run for president, I knew exactly why I was getting into this race: to work hard every day for the millions of Americans who need a voice in the White House.
I made you -- and everyone who supported me -- a promise: to stand up for our shared values and to never back down. I'm going to keep that promise today, tomorrow, and for the rest of my life.
I will be speaking on Saturday about how together we can rally the party behind Senator Obama. The stakes are too high and the task before us too important to do otherwise.
I know as I continue my lifelong work for a stronger America and a better world, I will turn to you for the support, the strength, and the commitment that you have shown me in the past 16 months. And I will always keep faith with the issues and causes that are important to you.
In the past few days, you have shown that support once again with hundreds of thousands of messages to the campaign, and again, I am touched by your thoughtfulness and kindness.
I can never possibly express my gratitude, so let me say simply, thank you.
Sincerely,

Hillary Rodham Clinton

This is a chicken-friendly blog. All chickens are free to hang out here, do chicken stuff and cackle away happily in the
sunshine. Thanks to Hugh Fearnly-Whittingstall, I'm setting all the chickens in my life free. His Channel 4 series Hugh's Chicken Run is likely changing the minds of thousands in Britain today and hopefully convince the mass production giants such as Tesco, Morrisons, Sommerfields, Marks & Spencer, Sainsburys and all the others, that consumer support is strong for happy chicken lives.
I pledge to:
- Support better lives for chickens -- let the chicken's OUT!
- Buy only free range chickens
- Boycott cheap chicken food stalls, fast food chains, restaurants or other non-happy chicken suppliers
The chicken's in my life deserve as much joy as possible in their brief existence from egg to Sunday Roast. And I want to be guilt-free the next time I enjoy a delicious chicken dish. I hope you will consider buying happy chickens as well.
A £2 chicken is indeed a hard bargain to pass up at ASDA (American translation = Walmart) but why can't ASDA offer good prices on happier chickens? Buying a healthier chicken also means that you will get more meat for your money, and that a £5 happy chicken will go much further than the poor unfortunate sickly one. Think of it like you are getting a buy-1 get-one FREE offer, in one, free range chicken.
Yesterday I visited the fancy new Whole Foods shop in London's Kennsignton to check out posh chicken prices. Indeed, the lowest costing bird to be found in that shop was about £7, but there was a good amount of meat and a lot of selection in the types of chicken you can have -- everything from organic, to corn fed to chickens and many from a variety of geographic areas. I (naive that I am) like the idea of my chickens pecking about the green pastures of Cornwall, or taking in some seaside air near a British coast. Other shops carry free-range birds starting at £5-£6 and that is a fair price for a better bird. Waitrose offers their own stock of locally sourced, free range chickens and does not, to the best of my knowledge, even stock factory farmed chickens.
Granted, these high-end shops are overall out of my, and most people's budgets (I opted for trying Whole Food's smoked £2.39 tofu yesterday) and so that is why I'm really hoping to see my local Tesco Express offer more free range chicken options. If the majority are buying happier chickens, the prices will drop -- as chicken farms will alter practices to keep consumers happy and with more happy chickens available, the prices will come down. What do they call that? Supply and demand -- yes, that's it! I hope we see much more demand and supply of free range chickens, everywhere.
By this time next year, I hope to see all stores stocked with an ample choice of free range chicken products. I also hope to see free range birds become the norm for fast food chains, cafes, stalls and -- even in my cat's Whiskas cat food. Until that happen's my cat can eat fish.
