Using the style of a child's narrative story book, Georgina White-Aldworth has woven a fanciful, freakish reflection and commentary on the excess of modern society's obsession with how we look. In Rupture & Rhubarb, a beautiful woman bastardizes herself in an addictive pursuit of physical enhancement, ultimately transforming her face beyond recognition.
The heroine reaches her tragic turning point by overdosing on rhubarb jam, becoming vulnerable to a circus ringmaster, who maliciously masquerades as a surgeon. He pimps her into becoming The Ugliest Creature Alive, forcing her to join the Victorian circus freakshow. The tale is illustrated with Georgina's photographs of actors staged to portray the woman's life journey, from gorgeous to gory.
Georgina states of her work:
I believe ‘we’ have become obsessed with vanity, to the extent that many go to such extreme lengths to change themselves into the ‘ideal’ body. I decided to do this piece of work because I have a strong fascination with a child’s imagination and the portrait of movement between fantasy and reality.
Soon to earn a bachelors in photography from the University of the Arts London, London College of Communication, Georgina shows her work this Tuesday, 5th June 2007 in a private viewing at a gallery for the university. My upstairs neighbor, I was happy to volunteer my humble, magical urban garden for her to use as a location shoot. Below are sample photos.
